Going out alone.
I only just realized for the first time that both of my grandparents passed completely on their own. Imagine going in an empty hospital room, or a car with no other passengers. That’s terrifying. Absolutely in every way terrifying. You know you’re about to leave and there’s no one by your side to comfort you, or even be there immediately upon it happening. Your life leaves your body and it just sits there waiting for someone to find out. Imagine how different that must be from going in someones arms, or having them next to you. It makes everything seem fresh and awful in a whole new way looking back.

Everyone dies alone. Regardless of whether you’re surrounded by loved ones or the only one in the room, no one can make that journey with you.
